The ICF examines the country’s internal conditions, external interactions and broader regional dynamics.

Regarding Iran’s domestic developments, the country witnessed significant political, economic, military, social and ideological developments during the period under review. The most prominent political development was the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran on June 18, which triggered intense debate inside Iran and exposed divisions among political and security factions. One camp viewed the MoU as an exit from the war and a means of preventing further escalation, while another regarded it as a concession that undermined national interests and sovereignty.

Economically, Iran officially entered a severe stagflationary phase during the Iranian year 1404 AH (March 2025-March 2026), recording negative growth of -0.7% alongside annual inflation reaching 83% by June — the highest level recorded in the country since 1943. Militarily, media reports about the testimony of an American pilot who claimed to have observed unusual formations in Iranian airspace involving interconnected Iranian drones moving as a single unit sparked debate over Iran’s ability to rebuild and advance its military capabilities during wartime.

On the ideological front, the ICF examines the efforts of several religious authorities affiliated with the Wilayat al-Faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist) theory to establish religious legitimacy for Mojtaba Khamenei amid the religious and constitutional challenges that accompanied the transfer of power.

Concerning Iran’s interactions with the Arab world, the ICF highlights a number of significant developments. In Iraq, it examines the political environment surrounding the formation of the new government, in which Shiite forces secured nine out of 14 ministerial portfolios. The process unfolded amid disputes among Shiite alliances over the distribution of positions, US opposition to the participation of figures linked to Iran-backed militias and demands that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi commit to concrete measures aimed at restricting weapons to the state and combating corruption.

In Lebanon, May and June witnessed rapid developments linked to the repercussions of the US-Israel war against Iran and its impact on Hezbollah. During May, attention focused on Hezbollah’s position within the framework of indirect US-Iran negotiations, amid a clear divergence between Washington’s efforts to reduce Iranian regional influence and Tehran’s insistence that its support for Hezbollah was not a subject open to negotiation in any agreement with the United States.

As regards Iran-Israel tensions, the growing differences between the Trump administration and the Netanyahu government contributed to Israel’s reduced role in the US-Iran negotiation process, with reports highlighting that the details of the MoU were not shared with the Israeli government beforehand.

Iran Case File May-June 2026Download

The International Institute for Iranian Studies (Rasanah) has released its Iran Case File (ICF) for May and June 2026, providing the general public and researchers with a comprehensive analysis of the period under review.
