These latest elections marked the lowest voter turnout in over four decades in Iran. Predictably, they also led to a hardline takeover of Parliament after a state-led disqualification of major \u201creformist\u201d candidates. This political wrangling between the hardline and \u201creformist\u201d camps, along with growing public dissatisfaction in Iran, led to a 42.57 <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430238\/%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%AC-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B2%D8%AF%D9%87%D9%85-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%DA%86%D9%87-%DA%A9%D8%B3%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF\">percent<\/a> nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430472\/%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D9%84-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%DB%B4%DB%B2-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%DB%B2%DB%B5-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D8%A7-%D9%88%D8%AC%D9%88%D8%AF-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-%D8%AD%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%AB-%D8%A2%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88-%D8%B3%D9%82%D9%88%D8%B7-%D9%87%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%BE%DB%8C%D9%85%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF\">participation<\/a> in the recent elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, \u201chardliners\u201d reject that their victory was hollow. They blame lower voter turnout on the propaganda of \u00a0exiled opposition groups which dissuaded Iranians from participating in the polls after the outbreak of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430390\/%D8%B1%D9%87%D8%A8%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%82%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D8%A8%D9%87%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%87-%DB%8C%DA%A9-%D9%88%DB%8C%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B3-%D8%B9%D9%84%DB%8C%D9%87-%D8%B4%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AA%D8%A8%D9%84%DB%8C%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%AA-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%86%D8%AF\">coronavirus<\/a> in Iran. Rejecting that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/13981204000723\/%D9%BE%DA%98%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86%E2%80%8C%D9%81%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%B4-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%B7%D8%B1-%D8%B9%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%AC%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D9%88-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%AA-%D8%A8%D9%87\">disqualification<\/a> of \u201creformist\u201d candidates may have also led to a less-than-ideal voter turnout rate, the \u201chardliners\u201d also blame the current 10<sup>th<\/sup> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1398\/12\/04\/2209475\/%D8%AA%D8%AD%D9%84%DB%8C%D9%84-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D9%88-%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%AC-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D9%87%D9%88%D8%B4%D9%86%DA%AF%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D8%B9%D9%85%D9%84%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%AF%D9%87%D9%85-%D9%86%D9%87-%DA%AF%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF\">reformist\u201d-led<\/a> Parliament in Iran for under-performing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the elections, political rifts between the \u201creformists\u201d and \u201chardliners\u201d appear to have widened. The hardline Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the latest elections showed that Iran was a religiously-led <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430390\/%D8%B1%D9%87%D8%A8%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%82%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D8%A8%D9%87%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%87-%DB%8C%DA%A9-%D9%88%DB%8C%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B3-%D8%B9%D9%84%DB%8C%D9%87-%D8%B4%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AA%D8%A8%D9%84%DB%8C%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%AA-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%86%D8%AF\">democracy<\/a>, given that 37 elections have been held in the last 41 years since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. But President Hassan Rouhani, who is supported by most \u201creformists\u201d, warned that the new members of <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430512\/%D8%A7%D8%B8%D9%87%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D9%87%D9%85-%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%AD%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%87-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-%D9%88-fatf\">Parliamen<\/a>t had to represent the entire country and not just their supporters. The \u201chardliners\u201d say he is incapable of running the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/13981204000673\/%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%AA-%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%87-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A2%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%87-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AA%D9%86%DA%AF%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D8%B1%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%AA%D8%AD%D9%85%DB%8C%D9%84-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF\">country<\/a>, given the frequent anti-government protests, and is in no position to tell them what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defiantly, Iran\u2019s \u201chardliners\u201d \u2013 otherwise called the \u201cprinciplists\u201d \u2013 insist that they have a strong support base irrespective of the fact that mass disqualifications may have either barred or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1398\/12\/05\/2209968\/%DA%AF%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%B4-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D9%84%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AD-%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%DA%86%DA%AF%D9%88%D9%86%D9%87-%D9%82%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%85%DB%8C-%D8%B4%D8%AF\">dissuaded<\/a> prominent \u201creformists\u201d from competing against them. In Iran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430472\/%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D9%84-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%DB%B4%DB%B2-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%DB%B2%DB%B5-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D8%A7-%D9%88%D8%AC%D9%88%D8%AF-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-%D8%AD%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%AB-%D8%A2%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88-%D8%B3%D9%82%D9%88%D8%B7-%D9%87%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%BE%DB%8C%D9%85%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF\">provinces<\/a>, \u201chardliners\u201d claim they have had a major victory. Nearly 71 percent of the people in the Province of Kehgoliyeh and Boyerahmad, for example, and 43 percent in Qom, voted, and mostly for <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430472\/%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D9%84-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%DB%B4%DB%B2-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%DB%B2%DB%B5-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D8%A7-%D9%88%D8%AC%D9%88%D8%AF-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-%D8%AD%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%AB-%D8%A2%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88-%D8%B3%D9%82%D9%88%D8%B7-%D9%87%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%BE%DB%8C%D9%85%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF\">\u201chardliners\u201d<\/a>. In the capital Tehran, 1,259 candidates competed in the elections, in a city where most middle-class residents have generally voted for \u201creformist\u201d candidates. Only 26.2 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430472\/%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D9%84-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%DB%B4%DB%B2-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%DB%B2%DB%B5-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B5%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%A8%D8%A7-%D9%88%D8%AC%D9%88%D8%AF-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-%D8%AD%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%AB-%D8%A2%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88-%D8%B3%D9%82%D9%88%D8%B7-%D9%87%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%BE%DB%8C%D9%85%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%AA-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF\">eligible<\/a> voters \u2013 just 2,539,763 of the capital\u2019s residents \u2013 participated in the elections. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/13981204001114\/%D9%87%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%A7%D8%B2-259-%DA%A9%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AF%DB%8C%D8%AF%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%DA%86%D9%87-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C-%DA%AF%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF\">\u201chardliners\u201d<\/a> managed to win all the capital\u2019s designated 30 parliamentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/13981203000103\/%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%AC-%D8%B1%D8%B3%D9%85%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AD%D9%88%D8%B2%D9%87%E2%80%8C%D9%87%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%DB%8C%D9%87-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%A2%D8%B1%D8%A7\">seats<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top two \u201cprinciplist\u201d candidates and potential presidential candidates from Tehran were the former mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Seyyed Mostafa Agha MirSaleem. They each won 1,265,287 and 892,318 votes respectively. At least 14 \u201chardliners\u201d loyal to the former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won seats in the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/fararu.com\/fa\/news\/430307\/%D9%BE%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%AD%D9%85%D8%AF%DB%8C%E2%80%8C%D9%86%DA%98%D8%A7%D8%AF%DB%8C%E2%80%8C%D9%87%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B2%D8%AF%D9%87%D9%85-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%B4%D8%AF\">elections<\/a>. This includes the former head of Iran\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rajanews.com\/news\/334894\/%D9%88%D8%AD%D8%AF%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF-%DB%8C%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%AF%D8%9F-%D9%86%D9%82%D8%B7%D9%87-%D8%B3%D8%B1-%D8%AE%D8%B7%D8%9B-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B2%DB%8C%D9%90-%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%DB%8C-%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%B2%D9%87-%D8%A2%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%B4%D8%AF%D9%87-%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA\">Atomic<\/a> Energy Agency Fereydoon Abbassi, the former Minister of Transport and Urban Planning Ali Nikzad, the former Minister of Communications Reza Taghipoor, the former Deputy Minister of Planning Golam Hossein Rezvani, and the former head of the hardline Fars News Agency Seyyed Nezamoldin Mousavi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, Majid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1398\/12\/05\/2209968\/%DA%AF%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%B4-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D9%84%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AD-%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%DA%86%DA%AF%D9%88%D9%86%D9%87-%D9%82%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%85%DB%8C-%D8%B4%D8%AF\">Ansari<\/a> who is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/13981204001114\/%D9%87%D8%B1-%DA%A9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%A7%D8%B2-259-%DA%A9%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AF%DB%8C%D8%AF%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%DA%86%D9%87-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C-%DA%AF%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF\">reformist<\/a>\u201d and deputy for parliamentary affairs for President Rouhani won only 69,151 votes and came 36<sup>th<\/sup> in Tehran. The former mayor of Tehran and head of the \u201creformist\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1398\/12\/05\/2209968\/%DA%AF%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%B4-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D9%84%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AD-%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%DA%86%DA%AF%D9%88%D9%86%D9%87-%D9%82%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%85%DB%8C-%D8%B4%D8%AF\">Executives for Construction<\/a> faction Golam Hossein Karbaschi failed to win a seat. Alireza <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rajanews.com\/news\/334894\/%D9%88%D8%AD%D8%AF%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AF-%DB%8C%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%AF%D8%9F-%D9%86%D9%82%D8%B7%D9%87-%D8%B3%D8%B1-%D8%AE%D8%B7%D8%9B-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B2%DB%8C%D9%90-%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%DB%8C-%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%B2%D9%87-%D8%A2%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%B4%D8%AF%D9%87-%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA\">Mahjoob<\/a> won the highest number of votes cast for the \u201creformists\u201d in Tehran, 95,393, which put him 34<sup>th<\/sup> on the list, whereas the last \u201cprinciplist\u201d winner of Tehran\u2019s 30-memberlist won 642,214 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201chardliners\u201d also like to highlight that only 56 of the current members of Parliament were voted back despite the fact that 248, out of a total number of 290 current sitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/13981204000472\/%D9%86%D9%85%D8%A7%DB%8C%D9%86%D8%AF%DA%AF%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%DA%86%D9%87-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D9%86%D9%88%D8%B4%D8%AA%DB%8C-%D9%BE%DB%8C%D8%AF%D8%A7-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%87%E2%80%8C%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AF-%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%87%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%A8%DB%8C-56-%D9%86%D9%85%D8%A7%DB%8C%D9%86%D8%AF%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%AF%D9%87%D9%85\">members<\/a> of Parliament, either ran in the elections or registered to run before being disqualified. In less than two months, Iran will hold a second round of voting for candidates who received fewer votes to determine the setup of its next Parliament.
